The Solution:
Zander’s solution was to create a dual occupancy by dividing the existing five-bedroom home in two, dog-legging a fire-rated party wall north-south through the existing structure. To the west, he reworked the family home into a three-bedroom more contemporary yet faithful family home. Internal spaces were rearranged and opened more effectively to rear views. A sunroom was removed and replaced with an inviting open-plan kitchen and living space, featuring views of blue gums, jacarandas and more. A second storey was added to accommodate a third bedroom and study. To the east, he reworked the original to create a separate two-bedroom rental home, accessed from the top of the site, and featuring an open-plan living, dining and kitchen space overlooking the rear garden and pool. Both homes were created with minimal expansion of the existing footprint, minimal wastage, and by reusing materials wherever possible. Excess timber, including cedar, was reworked by Zander into a range of homewares, each bearing a stamp denoting its ‘house of origin’ in a mark of respect for its history. As Zander says: “This is not a solution for everyone, but as urban density increases, as it should and will, this is a sensible way of using your land.” |
